Professor Bill Lucas

Professor of Learning and Director of the Centre for Real World Learning, University of Winchester

Bill Lucas is Professor of Learning and Director of the Centre for Real-World Learning at the University of Winchester, UK. An internationally renowned education reformer, Bill’s research focuses on understanding those dispositions for learning which help people flourish throughout their lives, especially on creativity and practical learning. Bill is a board member of Skills Builder and strategic adviser to the Comino Foundation. Co-founder of Rethinking Assessment, Bill argues that schools should focus on developing all of the strengths of their pupils, academic and practical, formal and informal.

Bill’s acclaimed models of engineering habits of mind and of creative habits of learning are used across the world. They show that, to engage young people, especially boys, we need to make our teaching methods more interactive, driven where possible by pupils’ authentic questions. Bill has written more than 50 books from a best-selling guide to parenting, Help your child to succeed, to a critique of schools, Expansive Education: Teaching learners for the real world, and an attempts to change the current education system, Creative Thinking in Schools: a leadership playbook.
